Disc Herniation In The Lower Back?

A lower back disc herniation arises when the inner substance of a lumbar spinal disc protrudes through its outer, tougher casing. While certain herniated discs might not trigger symptoms (asymptomatic), others can potentially agitate nearby nerves, leading to sensations of pain, numbness, or weakness in the corresponding leg. These symptoms arise due to the nerve that’s affected by the herniation.

Andrews Approach to Lower Back Pain:

Have you encountered the discomfort of lower back pain during lifting? Perhaps you’ve also grappled with nerve pain intertwined with your lower back issues? The impact of lower back pain can be profound, disrupting your daily activities. If not properly addressed, it has the tendency to persist for extended periods. In 2011, I faced similar challenges, experiencing lower back pain accompanied by sciatica symptoms. Sciatica, a nerve-related pain extending down the leg, was particularly agonizing for me, affecting various movements like sitting, walking, and lifting. It seemed nearly everything triggered discomfort, except for reclining in a specific position with a pillow between my knees.

My journey, spanning a decade, has encompassed roles as a Chiropractor, Clinical Pilates instructor, and Personal Trainer. Remarkably, it was at the outset of my career that I encountered this injury.

Early diagnosis is key

After the injury, I pursued treatment from diverse colleagues for several months. Following the conventional protocol, I engaged in two physio/chiro appointments per week, supplemented by home exercises.

Fast-forwarding a year, I found myself still grappling with lingering lower back pain and moderate sciatic symptoms. An orthopedic consultation was suggested by my doctor, deeming traditional Chiro and Physio treatments unsuccessful. In his view, spinal surgery, such as discectomy, was the remaining option. Drawing from my educational background—an undergraduate Science degree and a Master’s in Clinical Chiropractic—coupled with a year in the field, I recognized that surgery should only be a last resort. This conviction led me to explore alternative paths to recovery. After experimenting with various rehabilitation protocols, I encountered a gym specializing in chronic back pain. The regimen was simple yet impactful—two appointments weekly for 10 to 12 weeks. Ten minutes were allocated to physical therapy, including massage and adjustments, followed by focused one-on-one exercise sessions in the gym for the remaining 20 minutes.

Six weeks into this innovative approach, my lower back pain and sciatic symptoms were alleviated.

Fast-forwarding another decade, I’ve applied this very protocol to treat numerous clients at my clinic in Thornbury. Our facility houses treatment rooms and state-of-the-art exercise equipment, synergistically employed to alleviate lower back pain. I’ve meticulously developed a tailored rehab protocol specifically addressing lower back pain, with or without associated sciatica. Each session comprises 20 minutes of hands-on therapy and 20 minutes of guided gym exercises, scheduled twice weekly for 6 to 10 weeks.

Years of dedicated research into lower back pain, coupled with extensive patient interaction, have underscored the efficacy of a straightforward protocol—combining hands-on treatment with resistance-based exercise prescription—for swift recovery. Monitoring strength improvements is paramount, as heightened strength often correlates with decreased pain levels. The significance of precision in home exercises cannot be understated, as misguided techniques may trigger symptomatic flare-ups.

My personal experience and my interaction with countless clients over the past decade have imparted invaluable insights. Suffering this injury in my early 20s has endowed me with a deep comprehension of the genuine nature of lower back pain and associated nerve discomfort—a perspective textbooks and patient descriptions could not fully convey.

A silver lining emerged from my own lower back and sciatic pain ordeal; it enhanced my capabilities as a practitioner. Should you be confronting lower back pain or sciatica, I’m enthusiastic about assisting you with my distinct treatment protocol.
