Lower Back Disc Herniation
About
Lower Back Disc Herniation Treatment In Preston
Back pain can originate from nerves, muscles, joints, bones or other structures in the spine.
A disc herniation in the lower back occurs when the centre material of a spinal lumbar disc pushes through the more robust external casing. Some herniated discs are asymptomatic (no symptoms). Others however can irritate nearby nerves which can result in pain, numbness or weakness in the associated leg that is innervated by that nerve.
Andrew’s Unique Approach To Disc Herniation:
Have you experienced lower back pain? Have you also experienced nerve pain associated with lower back pain? Lower back pain can be debilitating, it can be highly disruptive to your daily routine and if you don’t seek out the right treatment to fix it, lower back pain will often stick around for a long time.
In 2011 my symptoms were lower back pain with associated sciatica. Sciatica is a type of nerve pain running down your leg, which in my case, was travelling all the way to my foot. It’s very painful when you’re sitting, walking,
jumping, lifting.. Pretty much everything, unless you’re lying in the fetal position, on the floor, with a pillow between your knees.
I’ve been working as a Chiropractor, Clinical Pilates instructor and Personal Training for the past 10 years now and I did this injury at the very start of my career. After the injury I received treatment from various colleagues for a few months. I did the typical treatment protocol; two times a week physio/chiro appointments in conjunction with home exercises.
Fast forward 1 year and I still had minor lower back pain and moderate sciatic symptoms. My doctor suggested I seek an orthopedic consult because traditional Chiro and Physio treatment hadn’t worked. In his opinion, spinal surgery (e.g. discectomy) was the only remaining option.
Having studied an undergraduate degree in Science, a Masters in Clinical Chiropractic and working in the field for approximately 1 year, I knew this should only be used as a last resort option. Because of this, I decided to take a different approach to my recovery. After trying several rehab protocols I discovered a gym that specifically worked with clients who had chronic back pain. The method was simple, two apts a week for 10 to 12 weeks. 10 minutes each appointment was devoted to physical therapy such as massage and adjustments. Then the remaining 20 minutes was focused on working 1 on 1 with your therapist in an exercise studio.
After 6 weeks of this treatment I had no lower back pain or sciatic symptoms.
Fast forward 10 years, I’ve treated thousands of clients myself using the same protocol at my clinic in Preston. My clinic houses several treatment rooms and various exercise equipment that are used in conjunction to mitigate lower back pain.
I’ve developed my own proven rehab protocol, which is specifically tailored for lower back pain with or without associated sciatica. A single session encompasses 20 mins of hands-on therapy and 20 mins of gym guided exercises, 2 times a week for 6 to 10 weeks.
After doing several years of in depth research into lower back pain and working with patients for more than a decade, a simple protocol that encompasses half hands on treatment and half resistance based exercise prescription is the key to a quick recovery. Recording strength improvements is important so you can see and feel an increase in strength. Strength gains should equate to a decrease in pain levels. Home exercises can be vague, sometimes resulting in a symptomatic flare up due to incorrect technique.
I have learnt through personal experience and helped thousands of clients with lower back pain and sciatica over the past decade. Sustaining this injury in my early 20’s has given me an invaluable insight into how lower back pain with associated nerve pain is truly experienced. The perception of pain cannot be learnt from a textbook or fully appreciated from a patient who is explaining their symptoms to you.
My lower back & sciatic pain experience had a silver lining, it’s made me a better practitioner. If you are experiencing lower back pain and/or sciatica, I’m eager to help you with my unique treatment protocol. Book an appointment with me via our online booking system.
