Lower Back Pain

Back pain is a multifaceted condition that can arise from various sources within the spinal framework, including nerves, muscles, joints, bones, and other interconnected structures. This diversity in origin contributes to the varying nature of back pain. Different categories of back pain include acute pain, chronic pain, and neuropathic pain, which specifically involves nerve-related discomfort.

Acute pain is typically short-term and may persist for up to six months. It is often directly linked to tissue damage, such as muscle strains or ligament sprains. This type of pain serves as a response to injuries and generally recedes as the underlying damage heals. However, it’s crucial to acknowledge that if acute pain persists beyond a certain point, it becomes increasingly susceptible to transforming into chronic pain.

Chronic pain, on the other hand, is characterized by its long-lasting nature. It can originate from various sources, with injuries being a potential trigger. Structural issues within the spine, such as degenerative disc disease, have the capacity to fuel ongoing pain until effectively addressed. Unlike acute pain, which has a clear cause like tissue damage, chronic pain can be more complex, involving intricate interactions between multiple factors that contribute to its persistence.

In essence, understanding the nature of back pain entails recognising its diverse origins and varying manifestations. While acute pain often emerges as a direct response to tissue damage and can eventually transform into chronic pain, the latter can stem from a multitude of factors, making its treatment and management a more intricate process.

Types of Chronic Back Pain:

  • Failed Back Surgery Syndrome: This form of chronic back pain pertains to individuals who have undergone previous back surgery, yet continue to experience persistent pain. Despite surgical intervention, the pain persists, often necessitating further examination and alternative treatment approaches.
  • Chronic Lower Back Pain due to Disc Herniation: In this scenario, chronic pain results from the herniation of spinal discs, typically in the lower back region. The continuous pressure on nerves and surrounding structures contributes to prolonged discomfort.
  • Chronic Lower Back Pain due to Disc Herniation with Associated Sciatica: This type involves the additional complication of sciatica, where pain radiates down the leg due to nerve compression. The combined impact of disc herniation and sciatic nerve involvement results in enduring lower back and leg discomfort.
  • Chronic Lower Back Ligament Strain and Hypermobility: Chronic pain can also stem from persistent strain on the ligaments supporting the lower back. This is often coupled with hypermobility, where excessive joint movement contributes to ongoing pain and instability.
  • Chronic Back Pain without a Clearly Determined Cause: A complex and challenging scenario, this type of chronic pain lacks a distinct cause despite comprehensive evaluation. It may involve multifaceted interactions between various factors, making diagnosis and treatment intricate.
  • Fibromyalgia: This chronic pain disorder entails widespread musculoskeletal discomfort, often accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbances, and heightened sensitivity to pressure. While fibromyalgia affects various body regions, it can manifest as chronic back pain, significantly impacting daily life.

Andrews Approach To Chronic Lower Back Pain:

Have you encountered the distressing grip of lower back pain? Perhaps you’ve also grappled with the added agony of nerve pain linked to your lower back woes. The impact of lower back pain can be far-reaching, disrupting your daily routine and, unless treated effectively, becoming a prolonged companion.

In 2011, my own lower back pain unfolded accompanied by relentless sciatica. This nerve pain journeyed down my leg, a fiery sensation that extended all the way to my foot. The agony was unrelenting, making even the simplest activities like sitting, walking, or lifting a monumental challenge—except when I was curled up on the floor in a fetal position with a pillow wedged between my knees.

My professional journey as a Chiropractor, Clinical Pilates instructor, and Personal Trainer began a decade ago, and it was during these early days that I faced this very injury. In those initial months post-injury, I sought treatments from various colleagues and adhered to the standard regimen—frequent physio/chiro appointments combined with diligent home exercises.

However, a year later, while my lower back pain had slightly eased, the grip of sciatica remained strong. It was my doctor who recommended an orthopedic consult, convinced that traditional chiropractic and physiotherapy treatments had run their course. In his view, surgical intervention like a discectomy was the final resort.

Armed with a background in Science and a Masters in Clinical Chiropractic, coupled with my year-long immersion in the field, I recognized surgery as a last-ditch effort. This conviction led me to explore an alternative path to recovery. Amid various rehabilitation approaches, I stumbled upon a gym that specialized in chronic back pain cases. The formula was uncomplicated—two appointments each week for 10 to 12 weeks. Each session comprised 10 minutes of hands-on therapy, encompassing massage and adjustments, followed by 20 minutes of dedicated one-on-one exercise guidance.

Remarkably, within just six weeks of this novel approach, my lower back pain and sciatica were silenced.

Fast forward a decade, and I’ve incorporated this transformative protocol into my practice in Preston, where I’ve treated numerous clients. My clinic houses not only treatment rooms but also an array of exercise equipment, synergistically utilized to combat lower back pain.

My journey and discoveries culminated in the formulation of a tailored rehabilitation protocol, honed to address lower back pain, with or without accompanying sciatica. Each session entails 20 minutes of hands-on therapeutic care, complemented by another 20 minutes of guided gym exercises, repeated twice weekly for 6 to 10 weeks.

Extensive research, coupled with a decade of patient interaction, reinforced the significance of a balanced approach—a protocol that intertwines hands-on treatment and resistance-based exercise. The efficacy of this method is manifested through increased strength, translating to diminished pain levels. In a world where home exercises can be ambiguous and technique-sensitive, this protocol has proven to be a steadfast route to rapid recovery.

My own lived experience, along with my professional journey, has not only enhanced my practice but also illuminated the true essence of lower back pain and its nerve-induced companionship. This unique vantage point drives my commitment to help those grappling with lower back pain and sciatica, propelling me to offer my distinct treatment protocol. Should you find yourself in the clutches of this pain, I stand ready to aid you on your journey to relief and recovery. Secure your appointment via our convenient online booking system.
