What is involved in a Dry Needling treatment?
The technique involved with dry needling is inserting an acupuncture needle into tight muscle belly’s. These needles are incredibly thin with a diameter of about 0.15 of a millimetre. The needle is inserted into the muscle which causes a muscular twitch response. This is the muscle contracting and relaxing. Commonly, you may feel slight aching in the muscles treated after your appointment for 24 hrs. Following the achy period, your muscles should feel a lot more relaxed and any muscle spasm that was evident prior to your treatment should have resolved.
Currently, Andrew works closely with the Fitzroy Stars Football Club in Thornbury, Snap Fitness in Preston and the Old Paradian Football Club in Bundoora.

What is the difference between Dry Needling and Acupuncture in Preston?
Dry needling specifically works on the muscles we are inserting the needles into. This should cause these localised muscles to relax. The muscle belly will relax, similar to how a muscle would relax after a long massage session.
This is in comparison to Traditional Chinese Medicine Acupuncture which is based around inserting needles into specific points to allow the free flow of energy throughout the body. So for example during a Chinese Medicine treatment, acupuncture needles could be applied to the feet which is aimed at helping treat an ailment in a completely different area of the body. The points identified to treat are based on meridian lines from ancient Chinese Medicine calendars. The theory is, that the free flow of energy allows the balance between Yin and Yang.
The application of the needles themselves, being inserted into the body is the same for dry needling and acupuncture. The philosophy of what the needles do to the body is different. Dry needling is now categorised under the medical umbrella, whereas acupuncture remains under the classification of eastern medicine.
Is there scientific evidence supporting Dry Needling?
Dry needling, with a similar application process to acupuncture, is a fantastic treatment used to resolve tight muscle adhesions. 20 years ago the practice was uncommon in Australia, but in the last two decades, there has been a lot of comprehensive research that has identified the huge health values associated with dry needling.

Can I book a Dry Needling treatment if my injury is acute (the injury has occurred in the last couple of days)?
In acute and chronic injuries dry needling can increase the speed of recovery dramatically. The very thin needles (approx 0.15mm in width) penetrate the fascia, muscles and tendons in trauma and help remove toxins and increase blood flow to these structures. If you suffer from continuously recurring muscle stiffness then this is the treatment for you.

After each needling session, you will most likely feel sore and tender in both the treated muscle and surrounding area.
This tenderness can last a few hours or up to two days post-therapy. Pain can be alleviated with an ice pack or heat.
Yes it can. We apply the acupuncture needles to the muscles around the neck. If these muscles are tight, they can put pressure on the nerves that refer to the forehead and eyes. This gives you the sensation of pain around your forehead, however, the root cause of this pain could be derived from your neck.
